Scones with a greek twist!!!

Another miserable, miserable day and only 2 weeks or so till Summer!!!  Trying to keep a two year old entertained indoors for hours on end is a bit difficult..  Sure I have the T.V. on all day (bad mum!) but I have put on the Greek cartoon DVDs so at least it’s educational.

Pastitsio - Greek meat sauce and pasta bake

Is it me or has this been the crapiest Spring in Melbourne for years!  Where is the sunshine?  The only good thing is that I don't feel out of place cooking "winter" comfort food..  The ultimate in greek cuisine is pastitsio.  Very Italian sounding dish, because it is.  Probably from the time of the Venetian occupation..  One positive aspect  that came out of all these countries (Bulgaria, Venice, Turkey... the list goes on...) wanting to claim Ellada as their own is the fusion of recipes....

Cheats Greek lemon chicken and potatoes

I literally just made this for dinner for Evangeline and had to share.  It's quick, it's really easy and if you like sticky lemony, garlicy Greek chicken and potatoes this one is for you!

Hidden Treasure!

Summer is over!  The crowds have all but disappeared from the beaches, the children have all gone back to school and there is a chill in the air first thing in the morning and when the sun goes down in the evening.

Eggs, eggs and more eggs!!!

As mentioned in my previous entry there is an abundance of staple summer vegetables at the moment.  Either at the “laiki” (farmers market) or organic home grown…  There are multitudes of recipes that one can cook at a moments notice with only a couple of other items found in the pantry.

Gemista - stuffed peppers!

I love how most Greeks here have their own vegie patch.. Rows of tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, peppers, hot peppers, eggplants and the compulsory greek basil in their pots.. My parents are lucky enough to have wonderful friends here who set up our house before they arrive.  Tsamourias planted the veggies, Olga organized Evangeline’s bedroom and dad who arrived 2 months before we did built an outdoor kitchen, verandah and set up Evangeline’s playground.

3 day trip to Black Sea coast of Bulgaria

We woke up to sunny Alexandroupolis, after our 3 day trip to the Black Sea in Bulgaria, this morning….We had some breakfast, I’ve done a bit of housework and now I’m ready to make lunch to send off with my dad so he can enjoy with his mates on the beach…

Greece 2013!!!!

We are finally here….After our ordeal with Mr and Mrs Bogan on our trip to Bali I was freaking out!  As we were saying goodbye to Lee, I told him that I was so stressed I knew that the whole ordeal of a 30 hour trip was going to be worse than childbirth…It wasn’t as bad as I thought.  Even though my brother Steve wasn’t sitting with us, due to his 6ft 6 inch frame,  it was a godsend to have him there.

Soutzoukakia Smyrneika

This happens to be my stepdaughters favourite greek dish next to bougatsa... I made sure to make it for them before they went on their European trip with their mum.  Kate who doesn't eat much, except for when chocolate is involved, had two bowls...so I was one very happy camper!!  Evangeline and I won't see them again till mid September..They get back 2 days after we go to Greece for 9 weeks.  Must learn to use Skype!!!
